Improving Listening Skills


Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, thereading comprehension is no problem, you are communicating quite fluently, but: Listening is STILL a problem!

First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening comprehension is probably the most difficult task (noun=exercise, job) for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. So, now you know you are not alone….! OK. The most important thing is to listen, and that means as often as possible. The next step is to find listening resources. This is where the Internet really comes in handy (idiom = to be useful) as a tool for English students. Here are some suggestions for interesting listening selections:

NO-HITTER: qual é o significado de “PITCH A NO-HITTER”?


Essa expressão é usada para descrever uma partida de beisebol em que o arremessador (pitcher) consegue um desempenho perfeito. Nesse esporte, o objetivo primordial do arremessador é fazer com que os rebatedores não consigam acertar as bolas que lhes são arremessadas e, consequentemente, não cheguem a conquistar a primeira base (base hit). Portanto, quando suaequipe consegue eliminar 27 rebatedores (três rebatedores vezes nove entradas), diz-se que elepitched a no-hitter. Em outras palavras, nenhum rebatedor avançou até a primeira base durante toda a partida.

LAME: qual é o significado e a tradução do adjetivo?


LAME = insatisfatório; coxo MUD = lama As sugestões de tradução para lame são “insatisfatório”, “insuficiente”, “imperfeito”, “incompleto”, “inaceitável”; “manco”, “coxo”, “aleijado” etc. Mas se fame quer dizer “fama” e dame, “dama”, por que lame não significa “lama”? Por que, em português, o mesmo verbo é usado nas frases “tomar ônibus” e “tomar remédio”? Por que usamos a mesma palavra para “manga” (fruta) e “manga” (de camisa)?
